The latest news from the IRS shows that unclaimed income tax refunds for a total of about $1.5 billion is probably waiting for an estimate of 1.5 billion taxpayers who did not file a 2018 form 1040 federal income tax return, but people still need to act before April 18 which is the tax deadline. The median value for the unclaimed tax refunds is $813 which means half of the unclaimed refunds will be below $813, and half will be higher than that, the IRS said.
“In cases the federal income taxes return was not filed”, the IRS states “the law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity to claim a tax refund”. If they do not file a tax return within three years, the money will become the property of the U.S. For 2018 tax returns, the opportunity closes April 18, 2022, for the taxpayers. The law requires taxpayers address, mail and ensure the tax return is postmarked by that date.
Taxpayers missing the form W- 1098, 1099 or 5498 from 2018 to 2020 will be requested for copies from their payers like banks or employers. The IRS offers a free wage income at IRS.gov using the Get Transcript online tool for taxpayers who cannot get missing forms from their employers. The IRS says that they are not going to make changes to the refund amount. So, if you don’t file the 1040 federal income tax for 2018, you will be able to get it this year 2022 with your next tax refund. This is a clear reminder from the IRS for all taxpayers that apply within these conditions.
